Let’s talk about marriage, with grace.

How do we understand marriage, our sexular culture and the state? How do we more than understand it, how do we as Christ’s church engage with the new world order, with grace?

Since many have undertaken to write to local newspapers concerning a postal survey on same sex marriage, I wrote the following letter to the editor of the Bendigo Advertiser (which was never printed, but that’s okay as I don’t expect or demand a hearing). I wrote this because wish to encourage churches not to lose confidence in the gospel we preach. I wrote it also to all in our community as an invitation to see a better vision of the good life than what if being offered and sold in cheap soundbytes.

Let’s talk about marriage

I’m not anyone important in this city, and so I write with weakness. I’m a Christian but not from a significant church, nor a large church – and I don’t seek power nor am I panicked at the perceived loss of power and influence the church is facing. In fact the Bible I love to read shapes my understanding of myself and the church as, ‘the scum of the world, the refuse of all things’ (1 Corinthians 4:13). The church is dear to God, but we can’t demand recognition or elevated status in society – we don’t play that way.

So when it comes to the conversation, debates and sadly hate surrounding same sex marriage – I can’t come into this conversation with any street cred. I can only come humbly with an invitation: let’s talk about the meaning Jesus makes for marriage.

This will sound weird to many, but marriage is all about Jesus (cue the laughter, I don’t mind). There is much more to discuss about this, but let me leave you with that invitation. Why not come along to Reforming Church this coming Sunday September 10th, 10.30am at the Quarry Hill Hall and hear more about Jesus who loved like no other, with humility.
