“Repentance” sounds like one of those religious words that belongs in today’s swear jar. Even if the sound of it doesn’t offend you, it’s likely that we generally don’t attach it to other words like joy, happiness or liberating. Yet if we trace a line from repentance in the Bible to God, we see it always end in experiences of relenting from disaster, relief, forgiveness and ultimately repentance leads to rejoicing.
It’s this experience of a great repenting and God’s great relenting that we will engage with on Sunday, as we hear the good news of Jesus proclaimed from Jonah 3.
